Tahrir Square is transformed into Tiananmen Square

It seems that the gangster brigade that took over the Egyptian government in a military coup in June has transformed Tahrir Square into the infamous Tiananmen Square of the attempted rebellion in Beijing in 1989. A dramatic photo in the New York Daily News shows a military tank gun down a lone unarmed protester.

Now you see him.

Now you see him — DEAD.

You should never forget profound wisdom from George Washington.

Government is not reason, it is not eloquence, it is force; like fire, a troublesome servant and a fearful master. Never for a moment should it be left to irresponsible action.(2)

These days Egyptians are learning hard lessons about the true nature of Big Government. As Ludwig von Mises put it,

The essential feature of government is the enforcement of its decrees by beating, killing, and imprisoning. Those who are asking for more government interference are asking ultimately for more compulsion and less freedom.

We often see people demanding action from Big Government, but von Mises put it just right.

The worship of the state is the worship of force. There is no more dangerous menace to civilization than a government of incompetent, corrupt, or vile men. The worst evils which mankind ever had to endure were inflicted by bad governments.

I doubt that it is possible to find a group of more incompetent, corrupt and vile men than those attempting to run Egypt these days.

A resident of the “30 square miles surrounded by reality,” I spend most of my time teaching economics and statistics to undergraduate students. I enjoy, naturally, economics and business, but also science (I was once an astronomical observatory assistant), politics, photography, food, travel and sports. Madison has grown quite a bit since 1978 when Governor Lee Dreyfus made that remark. According to Wikipedia, Madison is 67.3 square miles of land and 16 square miles of water. I get it now! Thanks :)

When you talk about Big Govt., are you talking about programs like welfare and medicare?

Thanks for the comment, Tanya. When I’m talking about Big Government I’m referring more to the concentration of power, a concentration of force and coercion, in a few hands, it’s a monopoly on power, that imposes one-size-fits-all solutions on people without regard to local needs, wants or even sensitivities. There are plenty of ways for decentralized government, and thus decentralized power, to offer programs that people want including welfare and medicare. Monopolies are seldom a good idea or a natural outcome of a healthy society. And, that’s my view of government. Centralized power wielded by the elites is not conducive to the development of a healthy society. :-)
