About

This blog is a compilation of various topics that got my attention as I go about my day. When I get some free time I enjoy topics in the sciences (I was once an astronomical observatory assistant), politics, education, photography, food, gardening, travel and sports.

I have lived here in Madison, Wisconsin almost 25 years. The city was once referred to as “30 square miles surrounded by reality.” It has grown quite a bit since 1978 when Governor Lee Dreyfus made that remark. According to Wikipedia, Madison is 67.3 square miles of land and 16 square miles of water. Here’s one of my favorite views of the isthmus. It’s a pretty good place. Come and visit us. http://www.visitmadison.com/

I’ve been ready many interesting things about Madison, WI, lately. It sounds like a progressive and friendly city, you’re lucky to call it home!

    • Mike says:

Thanks for commenting, Elisa. Madison is an alright place. Spring’s too short. Summer’s really humid. And, Winter’s way too long. But we manage especially those of us who enjoy good food and drink. :-)

  6. Jackie says:

    • Mike says:

    Hi Mike

I graduated from UW-Madison in 1980. Loved the town and its lay back atmosphere. Came back a few times much later and was disappointed with the invasion of “concrete”. I know, it is Progress.

    Your lucky to live there.

    Henry

    • Mike says:

Hi, Henry, thanks for writing. You’re right. The concrete has been spreading here with lots of high rises in the Isthmus and campus areas. Yaa, progress ;-) Now there is even one one East Wash and more planned for the East Side. Come on back for a visit. The politicians have a special welcome back exaction if you stay at a hotel. It helps us pay for the unprofitable convention center. :-)

love to read “30 square miles surrounded by reality” …made me think why we even refer places by name and not by the quality

    • Mike says:

Exactly! Now the city is up to 77 square miles due to the city’s annexation actions of those zones of reality. :-)

      • Kavita Joshi says:

I can imagine…but I think logically when you refer to this then it is exactly who you are living with reality..I might say in that case I am living with reality with a tint of dreams and imagination :)

        • Mike says:

Kavita the dreamer and imagineer! That’s not a bad line for your name card. :-)

          • Kavita Joshi says:

awe that is so sweet..I love it :) I am making puppy eyes now..lol

    • Mike says:

Thanks for the note, Anne. It’s not a bad place up here on the lakes. And, in the Winter it’s pretty with the snow, …, until we have to get out into the stuff. :-)

I visited Wisconsin last year and wrote a couple of posts. It’s a beautiful state, I have relatives there, and I plan to return soon, I hope. As well as return to your blog! http://catherinesherman.wordpress.com/2012/07/13/piano-man-in-madison-wisconsin/

Mike, I liked your “flag counter” widget on your main page and I have set up an account with “Flag Counter” for my blog. However, I have no idea where I copy the HTML code to? This is a widget, correct? Which one do I utilize? If you can provide info on how you exactly did that, I would be quite appreciative. Thanks!

    • Mike says:

Put it in a text box widget. :-) That’s the trick.

      • blade3colorado says:

        I will try that. Thanks!
